2017 Marching Band Camp Dates

Hello, AHS Band Families!

The moment you've all been waiting for!!!!!!  We are now announcing dates for the 2017 Marching Band Camp!  I understand that many of you are about to plan family vacations for the summer, and need to know these dates so you can make sure your student is present at band camp.  All of the band camp dates are required rehearsals.

This year's dates are as follows -
Monday, July 24th - Friday, July 28th, 8am-5:30pm
Monday, July 31st - Friday, August 4th, 3pm-9pm

First day of school - Monday, August 7th

The school calendar for MNPS is slightly different from what they've done in year's past, so that is why the first day of school is a week later, and why we are going to run rehearsals in the afternoon and evening the second week.  This will also allow us to be more efficient as the temperatures in the evenings will be cooler than during the day.

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW!  ALL students will be REQUIRED to attend ALL band camp days.  Plan vacations, doctor's appointments, dentist visits (my favorite), dog sitting adventures, babysitters clubs, and all other events AROUND these dates.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Union City Invitational

The purpose of this post is to inform you about the many details surrounding our bands participation in the Union City Marching Invitational, our first contest of the year!  Please read this post in its entirety to ensure that you are informed of each detail.

On September 17th, we will be traveling to West Tennessee to participate in a contest at Union City High School.  Taking this trip across the state provides these students with a unique experience that most of them have never experienced that they will remember forever!

Union City High School is approximately 3 hours from Antioch High School.  Because of this distance, and because there is a good chance we will be selected to participate in the "finals" performance that happens in the evening, we have chosen to NOT return to AHS that night, but to stay overnight at a hotel in Union City.  The students will report to AHS at 6am on Saturday, September 17th and will be bussed from AHS to UCHS.  The students will participate in the contest throughout the day and into the evening and will then be bussed to the hotel.  Students will wake up on Sunday, September 18th, have breakfast in the hotel and will then be bussed back to AHS with an approximate arrival time being 12:30pm

Students will be lodged in the hotel in groups of 4 by gender.  They will be filling out rooming requests in class within the next couple of weeks.  While in the hotel, students will be under the supervision of 8 members of the marching band staff, along with 8 parent "chaperones" all who have extensive experience working with students.

There is NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE for this trip.  Funds to pay for bussing and hotels were all acquired by fair share payments and significant fundraising efforts over the summer.  Students will NOT have to pay for their hotel rooms.  Students will be expected to bring $6 to pay for their dinner, which is a spaghetti dinner being provided by the Union City Band Boosters.  Events like this can only take place when parents and students stay current and up to date on their "fair share" payments.  Please make sure you are doing so!

ALL MARCHING BAND STUDENTS will be expected to be in attendance at this contest.  If certain circumstances require your student to return home on Saturday evening, or any time before our scheduled arrival back at AHS on Sunday, you must arrange your own method of transportation for your student.  If that is the case, you will be taking your student home from Union City on Saturday night, and they will not be staying with us at the hotel, I need to know that information AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

As with every contest, we encourage ALL parents to attend!  The students perform better when they have an army of support in the stands cheering them on!  An adult ticket for the entire day (both Prelims and Finals) is $18.  Children ages 5-12 are $5.
As I mentioned previously, we are offering a handful of travel packages for parents and families.  These packages will include charter bus transportation to and from Union City, and hotel accommodations with the band.  Please stay tuned for this information and act quickly as spots are limited!

For those of you choosing to travel on your own, there are a few hotels in the area that are available.

The students and staff will be housed at the following hotel.  Please do NOT call to book your own room here.  They will tell you the hotel is full as we have most of the rooms blocked off and are getting a great deal on the rooms.
Quality Inn by Choice Hotels
2201 Reelfoot Avenue, Union City, TN 38261

Other hotels within 15 minutes of Union City High School:

Country Hearth Inn and Suites
2009 West Reelfoot Avenue, Union City, TN 38261

Hampton Inn Martin

(731) 587-5800

Econo Lodge Martin
853 University St, Martin, TN 38237
(731) 587-4241

Please stay tuned as there will be a much more detailed itinerary coming out within the next couple of weeks.  Some parents may be nervous about sending their child on an overnight event with their friends, but I assure you, the staff in place has the experience to execute the logistics of this trip with ease.  I spent three summers traveling with groups of more than 200 across Europe.  Taking 140 of the best high school students around to West Tennessee will be very manageable!  The students are VERY excited about this opportunity and I am beyond thrilled to be able to help provide a wonderful educational experience for them while allowing them to have a blast with some of their closest friends!

As usual, please do not hesitate to e-mail me with ANY questions you might have!

This week in band!

On the eve of our second week of band camp, here are the latest updates!

The students had an OUTSTANDING week of camp last week!  We are very much looking forward to making more progress this week.  Rehearsals this week are 8am-6pm.  We will rehearse Monday-Thursday and will NOT have rehearsal on Friday.  Many students have signed up to take the bus to the DCI show on Friday night and we are pumped for that social opportunity!

On Thursday of this week, we invite you to attend a brief performance where the students will show off everything they've learned over the course of our two week band camp!  The performance will begin at 5:30pm in the stadium, will last approximately half an hour, and will include a guest performance by the Music City Drum Corps!

THANK YOU to all of the parents that attended our parent meeting on Thursday night!  We will be holding those meetings the third Thursday of every month to keep you informed!  REMEMBER!  If you would like to sign up to help volunteer with the MANY things we need help with, or have any fundraising ideas, please e-mail our band booster president, Luisana Arias, at president@antiochband.net and she will connect you with the appropriate person!

PARENTS...especially FRESHMEN PARENTS!  If you'd like to be involved in your student's life and contribute to the success they will have this year, then JOIN US!  We have MANY volunteer opportunities and we NEED YOUR HELP!  Shoot an e-mail to president@antiochband.net and we will get you connected!

As always, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns!

This week in band!

Happy Sunday, AHS Band Families!

Color Guard and percussion clinics begin this week on Tuesday and Thursday from 6-8pm.  These clinics are for students interested in being members of the color guard, drumline, or front ensemble for the 2016 marching band.  These clinics will give students an opportunity to learn and practice skill and techniques that will be expected at the auditions later this month.

In addition to those clinics, solo ensemble registration (both form and money) is due to me by Wednesday.  Solo and Ensemble is optional for all students, but is highly recommended for those students desiring to better themselves on their instruments; which is hopefully ALL of our students!  The students were given a form, can get extras from me, and that form along with $7 is due to me by Wednesday if they choose to participate.

PLEASE MARK TUESDAY, MAY 10 ON YOUR CALENDAR NOW!  This is a REQUIRED registration meeting for ALL students that will be in the band at AHS next year.  More information to come, but the meeting will be at 7pm in the AHS Auditorium.

Financial statements were handed out to all students this past week detailing your current balance with regards to fair share payments.  If you have any questions regarding this statement, please e-mail Amber Moseley and Amy Baker, band booster treasurers, at: treasurer@antiochband.net.  These statements are available 24/7 online through Charms.

SENIOR FAMILIES:  Please note that the school will not allow any senior to participate in ANY senior week activities OR GRADUATION until the balance of your fair share is paid in full.  Please take care of this in a timely fashion as to avoid any headaches later!

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions!
