Can I be in band and other activities such as athletics?

YES YES YES!  The positive relationship between the fine arts programs and the athletic department is something that we value greatly. There has never been a situation that we have not been able to work out between programs. With an accelerated block schedule we recognize that it can be difficult to participate in as many events as students would like. Our philosophy in the band program is to provide as many opportunities as possible for students.  We currently have numerous students that participate in marching band and varsity athletic teams.


Do we have to be in both marching band and concert band?

While there are certain circumstances where students participate in just the marching or concert band, we recommend that students participate in both to receive a well rounded musical experience.  There are many students that prefer marching season and just “put up with” concert season while they wait for the next marching season, and vice versa!  However, the key to having a great marching band is to do outstanding work during concert season, and the key to having a great concert season is to have the fundamentals of playing and rehearsing that are developed during marching season.  Bottom line, we recommend doing BOTH marching AND concert band!


How much time does band require?

We know that the summer band and fall schedule can look intimidating. Please recognize that with all of your hard work, you receive fine arts and P.E. credit. Marching band usually lasts until the end of October.  Given new adjustments to the band schedule during the school day, we will be able to cut down the amount of time being spent rehearsing after school as compared to previous years.  There are scattered rehearsals throughout the summer that students are required to be at if they are in town, and a week and a half of “band camp” that’s held at the school two weeks before school starts.  During the fall, the marching band rehearses on Tuesday and Thursday nights and performs at home football games at five competitions held on Saturdays.  


Am I good enough to be in the band?

Absolutely! You have participated in a fantastic middle school program that has equipped you with all of the necessary skills to be in the high school band.  Even if you are new to your instrument, or started playing after your classmates, we will work to catch you up during summer rehearsals and sectionals.


Should I be afraid of marching band?

Marching Band is a new and exciting opportunity. You will have plenty of chances to acquire all the skills necessary to thoroughly enjoy your experience in marching band. Did you every imagine that you would be this great a musician after your first week in beginning band class?  Most students “hate” marching band or feel extremely defeated during the first couple days, but talk to any of our upperclassmen; they’ll tell you that feeling fades fast!


What if I can't memorize music?

Think through the Bb concert scale. Do you have that memorized? How did you do that? Exactly, through repetition! You will have more than enough time in marching band to memorize the music.


Do I have to take PE if I am in Marching Band?

No. Marching Band is a PE credit.


What if I don’t have room in my schedule to take band with all of my IB and AP classes?

This is NOT true!  You DO have room in your schedule!  The band program houses the brightest and most intelligent students in our school!  A large percentage of them are either IB or AP students…or both!  The wonderful administration that does the master scheduling understands the potential of conflict regarding registering for band and IB/AP and will be creating a master schedule that allows students to do both band and IB/AP classes.


Do you have to audition to be in the marching band?

No.  There is no audition for acceptance into the marching band.  Through summer rehearsals and band camp, we may do brief playing auditions simply for chair/part placement. 


How are students placed in the different concert bands (Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble)?

All students are placed in a band class based on auditions that occur at the end of the school year.  All students will complete and individual / one-on-one audition to determine placement.  The Symphonic Band is made up of mostly younger / less experienced musicians, while the Wind Ensemble is made up of a smaller group of older / more seasoned musicians.


How do I join the Colorguard/Winterguard?

The Colorguard is the auxiliary squad of the marching band and is open to both males and females. This specialized group hosts auditions in the Spring for the following Fall semester. During the Spring Semester, the Colorguard participates as a Winterguard in competitions. Check the calendar for audition dates.


Can I participate in band for only half of the school year?

No. We require all band students to participate for a full year unless extenuating circumstances arise. Please speak with an AHS band director for more information.


What do double-reed players do during marching season?

Double-reed players can choose to audition for the Drumline, Front Ensemble, Colorguard or make a seasonal switch to a new instrument for marching season.


What should we do if my student has a conflict with a rehearsal, game or other performance scheduled on the band calendar?

Generally, attendance at all rehearsals, games and performances is mandatory. It is expected that band will be a priority, so please consult the band calendar before scheduling other appointments. If you do have a conflict with any band events, contact the director immediately. Early communication is key.


Does it cost money to be in the band program?

Yes.  Because of all of our extra curricular events/activities associated with our program, we have set a band fee that covers all of the additional expenses required for us to operate.


I write a variety of checks for band functions; to whom should I write my checks?

• All checks should be made payable to the Antioch Band Boosters Club, except for private lessons.

• Private lesson checks should be made out to the private lesson teacher.

*** We encourage the parents to use the memo section of your check, for student's name, type of fundraiser, etc. for proper crediting. This is very helpful as some of the students' names are different than the name on the check.
